Black Eye
Character & Graphic Illustrator
BLACK EYE is a character brand created in June 2019 by
graphic illustrator, Ji Yeon Kim. Previously based in New Zealand, she now operates from South Korea.
BLACK EYE aims to produce original character merchandise and illustrations that walks the middle line between the fantastical and mundane while presenting often controversial/taboo/uncomfortable themes in a generally non-confrontational way; opinionated, but non-aggressive way.
Some reoccurring themes explored are (but not exclusive to) androgyny, alienation, humanism, human idealism, fatality, and societal decay.
BLACK EYE Dark leans heavier into it's darker themes, producing more explicit depictions of various themes. Exploring exploitation, corruption, physical and psychological violence, and the vile side of humanity.
BLACK EYE Light creates artwork rooted in similar themes but removes the obvious elements of darkness such as blood and horror, with comical or cute parallels/metaphors taking their place with the goal of making the characters and themes more approachable to a broader audience.

Despite the themes in my artwork, I am actively against war and violence. It's a true failure and shame of humanity, and that war should be kept as tragedies of the past, not a foundation for our future.
